Kentron, where everything happens
Kentron is the central district and it is very nearly the whole of the city's evening. Republic Square with its fountains, the pedestrian Northern Avenue, the Cascade stairway with a view over the city, and Abovyan and Tumanyan streets with somewhere to sit every few paces.
Distances are walkable: twenty minutes from the square to the Cascade, and you will pass everything an evening needs on the way. If this is your first time in Yerevan, the simplest plan is to stay in Kentron and not travel anywhere at all.
Wine and conversation
Saryan Street is short, and it is the street that gave Yerevan its reputation as a wine city. The wine bars stand in a row, tables go out onto the pavement, and in warm weather people sit there until late.
This is an evening for talking rather than for loud music. If you want to start slowly and decide as you go where to move on to, start here.
Later on
Club nights here start late. Most places are empty before midnight, which does not mean the evening has failed, only that the time has not come yet. The real movement happens between one and four in the morning.
Live music and jazz are a genuine strength of the city rather than something laid on for visitors. The playing is good and it goes on late.
Practical things a visitor should know
None of this is difficult to navigate, and most of the friction people expect does not exist here.
- Taxis are ordered through an app, they are cheap, and a ride across the city takes minutes.
- Walking in the centre at night is unremarkable and the city is calm. That surprises some visitors more than it should.
- Carry some cash in drams. Cards are widely accepted but not everywhere, and small places often are not.
- Russian is understood almost everywhere and English is fine in the centre. Nobody expects Armenian from you.
- Summer moves everything outdoors and a few hours later; in winter it is all the same, just indoors.
- Tipping is around ten per cent, and some restaurants add a service charge to the bill already.
Where to stay
If you are here for a few days, the district matters more than the hotel's star rating. Kentron costs more and you never have to travel: the evening starts outside your door and a taxi is only needed on the way back.
Arabkir, just north of the centre, is the sensible compromise: rooms are cheaper, the centre is ten minutes away by taxi, and around you is an ordinary residential district rather than a shop window for visitors.
One thing to settle separately and in advance is whether your hotel allows guests to your room. Policies differ, and reception is not the place to find out with someone standing next to you.
